How Companies Are Going Green

21 March 2009 1,250 views No Comment

Due to the expanding energy crisis that is affecting the world today, companies are looking for new ways to cut costs and develop their markets by eliminating the use of fossil fuels. This energy revolution of sorts is extremely important to our environment and the world since about one third of the energy waste in the US is due to industrial business. According to a recent report by the National Association of Manufacturers in 2004, cutting back just 20 percent of that consumption would save close to 19 billion dollars a year for those businesses and in turn, help alleviate the problems of global warming. The report also went on to mention that approx 30 percent of those savings can be achieved with NO capital investment.

Google has launched their RE<C (renewable energy cheaper than coal) campaign, a strategic plan in which the mission is to develop electricity from green energy sources cheaper than electricity produced from coal. Google.org is working with different innovative corporations who are building potentially breakthrough technologies. They are collaborating with other members of the renewable energy field, including R&D laboratories and universities, to build a future free of fossil fuel dependence.

According to a report by the non-profit Environmental Defense Fund, companies like SunPower, Sierra Nevada Brewing, Patagonia, Ikea, Nike, Hewlett-Packard, UPS, Yahoo and a variety of others are using green practices in their work sites. The technologies are showing up in product development, packaging, and energy-saving data centers among others. USA Today reported that the technology giant Sun Microsystems aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions 20 percent by the year 2012, through a range of practices including using cooler, energy-saving technology in its computer chips  as well as allowing thousands of its 34,400 employees to work from home. Permitting its employees to telecommute has saved hundreds of millions of dollars over the past six years in real estate and fuel costs. California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger stated that “green” companies and environmentally friendly laws in California, such as it’s Million Solar Roofs Plan (which provides an energy-bill credit for homeowners and building owners to install solar systems), will lead by example. “Are we going to wipe out global warming? Of course not,” Schwarzenegger said. “But we’re inspiring … the rest of the world to do the same thing.”
