Wind Energy Jobs on the Rise
With President Obama’s Economic Stimulus on the way, more jobs are becoming available in wind energy-
The wind energy industry in America is accelerating at a rapid rate to meet the increasing demand for clean, renewable power. President Obama’s recent $787 billion economic stimulus package has given America the push it needs into the direction of renewable energy, dedicating $62 billion to clean energy research and $500 million to green jobs training. It is estimated that, in order to produce 1/5 of America’s electricity by the year 2030, the wind energy industry will have to double the amount of wind turbine installations annually. The expansion is expected to supply many new wind energy jobs, from building and maintenance to development and planning. Wind energy companies are scouting all across the country for reliable, motivated individuals with the desire to put forth effort into their work while helping to revitalize our environment and economy. However, working in wind energy is not a career for the faint-of-heart; it demands careful attention and the utmost resilience. The Wind Technology Boot Camp at Cerro Coso Community College offers training for just that; 8 weeks of hands-on instruction and study to become a certified wind energy specialist, repairing and installing massive wind turbines all over the country. The work is potentially dangerous and leaves little margin for error. Candidates called for installation work need a strong body, cool head and a stomach for altitude. For those who
think they can make it in this grueling industry, starting pay ranges from $15 to $20 an hour; a definite breath of fresh air in this stagnant market. That could be what is causing the in-pour of students to community colleges for this expanding, fast-paced industry. Unfortunately, there are only a handful of wind technology programs available in community colleges, and they are usually completely filled by the first day of open enrollment. The U.S. was recently dubbed the globe’s number one wind-powered nation with more than 25,000 MW in place around the country and – according to an Energy Department report – wind energy could supply 20% of America’s electricity needs by 2030. With this growing green energy market, it is important to develop the educational process as well to ensure a prepared and successful future in renewable energy jobs.
