EPA Promotes Conversion of Old Cars into Alternative Fuel Vehicles

New Exemption Will Facilitate Process of Car Conversion to Alternative Fuel-

While there aren’t too many car companies raising the bar for more efficient green vehicles, the EPA is now giving car owners the unique opportunity to convert their own gas guzzler to run on alternative fuels. In calibrating, if you will, their rules for selling alternative fuel conversion systems for cars and certain trucks, they have opened a door to potentially eradicate America’s need for petroleum-based fuels. The EPA’s previous, more stringent standard was decided upon to make certain that inferior fuel conversion jobs didn’t inadvertently cause more pollution, which is more likely than not with a poorly installed system. The EPA’s preliminary rule either approved or denied the option for conversion solely based on the age of the car and engine, however the new rules offer many options to help car owners meet emission standards. Although the rules for newer engines and vehicles will remain basically the same as before, the new exemption will provide a less involved process for older cars and engines. In order to operate a vehicle with an installed fuel conversion, the EPA requires a certificate of conformity stating that the vehicle meets all U.S. emission standards. If the manufacturer or installer does not comply with this exemption requirement, they will most likely be charged for tampering under the Clean Air Act, which generally forbids altering an engine.
