Electric Cars Are Best Route Toward Reducing Carbon Emissions, Study Says
Study Shows that EVs Are the Answer to Lowering Emissions & Oil Imports-
According to a new study by Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy, electric cars are more likely to reduce emissions and lower U.S. oil imports than a national renewable portfolio standard. Research for the study included academic working papers on various topics, such as carbon pricing, renewable energy R&D, the wind industry, and global U.S. carbon and energy strategies. “As the country moves forward to deliberate on energy and climate policy,” the executive summary states, “consideration must be given to what policies would best accomplish the stated goals for U.S. policy — a reduction in the need for imported oil and in greenhouse gas emissions.” The Baker Institute research found “the single most effective way to reduce U.S. oil demand and foreign imports would be an aggressive campaign to launch electric vehicles into the automotive fleet.” According to the study, requiring that 30 percent of all vehicles be electric by 2050 would not only decrease U.S. oil consumption by around 2.5 million barrels a day, but would also cut emissions by 7 percent.
