U.S. Department of Defense Advances with Renewable Energy
Defense Department goes Green with RECs & Energy Efficient Lighting-
Robins Air Force Base, a logistics center and the largest industrial complex in Georgia, will offset approximately 5 percent of its annual electricity consumption by acquiring renewable energy credits offered by Georgia Power. Through the two-year agreement, RAFB will purchase around 40 percent of the total renewable energy sold through the Georgia Power Green Energy program; about 16 million kilowatt hours of electricity per year. Additionally, the base recently uncovered its 25-kilowatt, $425,000 solar array on-site which features sensor technology – allowing the panels to track the sun mechanically with
concentrated photovoltaic equipment that magnifies the sun’s power 500 to 1,000 times. Furthermore, according to a press release, the Department of Defense has obtained 10 portable shelter lighting systems which are intended to replace current fluorescent lighting presently utilized in free-standing field shelters. The lighting system – designed and manufactured by Cyberlux – employs white and red LED technology which can be powered by both AC and DC, including DC solar.
