Nice list. I am very happy to see living walls being No. 2 on your when so many people find them to be a mere whimsy of little benefit. I too create living walls but there is sooo much more we can do with them and sooo many things we still need to understand and develop about them before they'll become common practice. It is a great field that needs more acceptance and the cost to design and build to come down so that they can be used by many more people.

As for #10, Smart Slope, those have been around since I was in college (and that was a long time ago). They were made by a company out of Germany and called then "Luftenstein" (sp.?) or something like that. Our professor managed to get several sent to our college and we built 3 or 4 walls with them. They are great and there are many versions available now. Glad to see them get a thumbs up here and hopefully see them used more in the future. I wonder if they can be made from a recycled product or something that's less of a CO2 pig as concrete?

Why didn't you provide a link to each items web site for further info.?

The next California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) Policy and Planning Division Thought Leaders event, "Lessons Learned: Solar Leadership from Germany and California", will take place on Monday, July 11, from 10:30 AM to Noon, in the CPUC auditorium, at 505 Van Ness Ave., San Francisco.

Germany has been very successful at encouraging solar power, particularly with Feed-in Tariffs, but not without stimulating much international analysis on the advantages and disadvantages of their government policies. More recently, Germany's plan to phase-out all their nuclear power plants by 2022 is raising critical questions about how Germany will obtain adequate energy without nuclear (about 23% of total electricity supply currently), while achieving their goal of reducing carbon emissions by 40% from 1990 levels in 2020.

Germany currently obtains about 17% of their electricity from renewable sources, with goals of 35% of total electricity from renewable sources by 2020, and 80% by 2050. However, if they are to replace the nuclear power with renewable energy, they may need to deliver as much as 50-60% of total electricity from renewable sources by 2020, as they already have very aggressive energy efficiency targets (to increase energy efficiency by 20% over 1990 levels).

California and Germany have many similarities (and some significant differences) with respect to energy policies. We'll have an expert panel of solar industry executives discussing the challenges and opportunities for solar development in Germany and California in the context of the broader energy policy issues.

Our panelists:

Dr. Martin Heming, CEO, Schott Solar

Mr. Fred Jung, CEO and Co-Founder, juwi

Dr. Volker Nadenau, CTO, Bosch Solar Energy

Dr. Marc van Gerven, CEO, Q-Cells North America

Please reserve time to attend this free Thought Leaders event, either in-person or via webcast. A brief registration form is here: https://ia.cpuc.ca.gov/thtleaders/, and the webcast can be accessed from: http://www.cpuc.ca.gov/thoughtleaders.

For any questions or further information, please contact Ted Howard (ted.howard@cpuc.ca.gov). More information about this event will be forthcoming at: http://www.cpuc.ca.gov/thoughtleaders.

I work for an upscale AutoDealership in V.A....we sell ; Mercedes,Audi,Porsche,Aston-Martin & Smart cars..The Tesla electric cars come to our shop for repair because Tesla has not established a support network to maintain & repair these high-tech little cars...the platform is based on a Lotus but all the rest is unique to Tesla. The Inizio looks as if it based on track car with a bunch of high-tech electronic components & convenience features thrown into the mix ! I hope that Inizio can attract some "well healed" private investors or secure some of that OBAMA stimulus money and have some customer support & service facilities to maintain & repair these cool looking little cars ,before they start selling them to the public ! I have yet to meet a happy owner of a Tesla after they experience the service dilemma & long ,long, long, wait for parts to arrive...and lack of expertise in repair process.

First off, thank you for your feedback on this issue. Here's our take: while there is still pollution created when burning biofuel, it is MUCH less than conventional petroleum-based gasoline. To boot, plants that are farmed to create biofuel are replaced which helps offset carbon emissions from burning biofuel (as plants "eat" CO2 during the growing process). Right now, rising gasoline costs are almost too much for the everyday person to afford.... it's basically turning into a luxury to be able to get into the car and drive somewhere.. or take an airplane for that matter. So we're not saying here that biofuel/biomass is the one and only answer to our fuel/energy needs, but it definitely is much more practical for us as a nation to corner every possible market so that we aren't stuck without any viable alternatives if/when gas prices rise to $10 a gallon.... like it currently is in Europe. Thanks again for your comment and please feel free to respond with your thoughts.

What pollution is created by this biofuel? How much energy is spent to create and distribute this biofuel? Eliminating our dependence on foreign oil is nothing compared to eliminating our dependence on pollution-intensive fuels. This may do nothing more than help even our trade balance while supporting our addiction to dirty fuels. Will clouds of bioplastic exhaust no longer contribute to the greenhouse gas effect?
