You put one skin cream on to hydrate, another to tone and a last one to clean or prevent wrinkles. But what are the skin care ingredients you’re slathering on your face? Are they safe? Because the skin is a direct line to the bloodstream, it’s important to know what you’re using. We’ve listed 12 common skin care ingredients, the risks they may pose and healthful alternatives to try.

From moisturizer to bleaching cream, most women have a bathroom drawer full of lotions and potions designed to make them look youthful and refreshed. But what’s really in those skin care products? A glance at the confusing, unpronounceable ingredients on labels offers no clues. What are those chemicals, and could they hurt your health? Women should be careful because the skin is our largest organ, so some chemicals can enter the bloodstream almost instantly. “It’s important to know what you’re using,” says Margaret Lewin, M.D., clinical assistant professor of medicine at Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York City, and medical director of Cinergy Health, an insurance benefits provider. “Skin products are medications.” A one-time application probably won’t harm you, but bad effects can build up after years of exposure, says Lisa Benest, M.D., of Lisa Benest M.D. Skin Care and Laser Center in Los Angeles. “What you put on your skin plays a role in your overall health,” she says. So next time you shop for beauty products, read labels carefully and look out for the following 12 skin care ingredients, which some experts believe may be harmful to your health.

1. Skin Care Ingredients: Parabens
This chemical compound is a staple in almost all conventional skin care products, including moisturizers, Benest says. It’s used as a preservative to prevent bacteria and mold growth. On an ingredient list, parabens appear as methylparaben, propylparaben, ethylparaben or any other word with “paraben.” Risks when absorbed through skin: Studies show that parabens create mutations in mammal cells, Benest says. A 2004 study in the Journal of Applied Toxicology found parabens in breast tumors but didn’t show that parabens cause breast cancer. Healthy skin alternative: Many paraben-free products are available, thanks to public demand. The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a nonprofit research group, suggests Kiss My Face Sunscreen, or check out 365 Everyday Value Body Lotion at Whole Foods.

2. Skin Care Ingredients: Hydrocortisone
Found in anti-inflammatory creams, lotions, gels, sprays or ointments, hydrocortisone temporarily relieves minor skin irritations caused by eczema, insect bites, poison ivy and jewelry with nickel. It’s the active ingredient in anti-itch products. Risks when absorbed through skin: Hydrocortisone can thin out skin, Lewin says, so use it sparingly. It also interferes with the natural immune response against infected skin lesions. If used over large areas and/or with bandages that don’t allow the skin to breathe, “it can be absorbed and suppress the body’s production of the essential [hormone] cortisone,” she says. Healthy skin alternative: Think pink: Lewin suggests a milder chemical such as calamine lotion for itching. Other skin soothers are Sarna (generic name pramoxine), a topical anesthetic; and Domeboro Powder, an astringent that’s dissolved in water, soaked into a clean cloth and applied as a compress.

3. Skin Care Ingredients: Hydroquinone
This is used in medications to treat sun spots and dark, pigmented scars and burns, says Gloria Campbell D’Hue, M.D., founder of the Atlanta Center of Dermatology and MediSpa. Risks when absorbed through skin: Hydroquinone is considered safe for short-term use, but frequent side effects include skin irritation and allergic reaction, which may cause more hyperpigmentation, burning and itching, D’Hue says. “There are no reported cases of skin cancer or internal malignancies related to hydroquinone,” she says. “Nevertheless, the Food and Drug Administration continues to scrutinize hydroquinone preparations.” A dermatologist should monitor your usage if you’re applying strengths higher than 4%, D’Hue advises. And always apply sunscreen if using hydroquinone because it increases sensitivity to the sun. Healthy skin alternative: Skin creams with Kojic acid (derived from fungi), vitamin C, soy, licorice extract and glycolic acid can bleach discolored areas. “Natural alternatives aren’t as effective [in removing dark spots], but for mild cases, they’re adequate,” D’Hue says.

4. Skin Care Ingredients: Neomycin
This antibiotic, found in creams and lotions, prevents or treats bacterial skin infections, Lewin says. Risk when absorbed through skin: Neomycin frequently causes skin irritation, rash and burning, she says. Don’t smear it over large areas of the body, because neomycin “can be absorbed through broken skin and cause kidney and hearing problems,” she warns. Healthy skin alternative: Try Bacitracin, an over-the-counter antiseptic that rarely irritates skin, or Betadyne, Lewin says. But avoid the latter if you’re allergic to iodine, she warns.

5. Skin Care Ingredients: Synthetic Fragrances
Phthalates (synthetic fragrances) cling to skin and give products such as perfumes, hair gel and nail polish more staying power, Benest says. They’re also used to mask unpleasant smells in products. This ingredient often is listed as “fragrance” or parfum on labels. Risk when absorbed through skin: Phthalates affect men’s fertility. They’re linked to lower sperm motility and birth defects in boys’ reproductive systems, Benest says. Synthetic fragrances can also disrupt the body’s endocrine, or hormone, system. Healthy skin alternative: Go for fragrance-free products or those with scents from essential oils. For example: Trader Joe’s Purify Grapefruit Chamomile Sea Salt Scrub.

6. Skin Care Ingredients: Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate (SLS)
Love the sudsy action when you wash up? It probably comes from SLS, which acts as a detergent and boosts cleansing and lathering quality in shampoos, body washes and toothpastes, Benest says. This chemical is often disguised as a coconut derivative or as “comes from coconuts” on the label, Benest says. Risk when absorbed through skin: Animal studies have shown that SLS damages protein formation in eye tissue of young animals, leading to the possibility of ocular damage in children, Benest says. In one case, SLS was “a major irritant” to cells from a rabbit’s eye, according to a 2009 study published in the Biological and Pharmaceutical Bulletin in Japan. It may also react with other ingredients to form more toxic chemicals, such as a carcinogen called NDELA (N-nitrosodiethanolamines), she says. SLS may also irritate and damage the natural skin barrier and eat away at hair follicles and impair your hair’s growth. Healthy skin alternative: It’s hard to avoid. “Unfortunately, even many ‘natural’ shampoos, toothpastes, soaps and body gels in health food stores contain this ingredient,” Benest says. Look for labels that say “SLS-free,” such as the one on Tom’s of Maine Natural Toothpaste, or make sure it isn’t listed in product ingredients.

7. Skin Care Ingredients: 1, 4-Dioxane
Dioxane dissolves grease and thickens products, Benest says. It’s frequently found in lotions, creams, toothpastes and shampoos. Compounds with high concentrations of dioxane include polyethylene glycol (PEG) and ingredients with “myreth,” “laureth” and “ceteareth” as part of the word. Risk when absorbed through skin: “Dioxane is easily absorbed through the skin and is recognized in California to cause cancer,” Benest warns. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), inhaling high levels of 1, 4-dioxane for short periods can cause vertigo, drowsiness and headaches and irritate eyes, nose, throat and lungs. Long-term exposure also damaged the livers and kidneys of rats, according to a 2007 study published in the journal Toxicological Sciences. Healthy skin alternative: Alba Bath & Shower Gel is dioxane-free.

8. Skin Care Ingredients: Methyl Salicylate
This topical aspirin-like medication, usually combined with menthol, relieves muscle aches and sprains, Lewin says. Risk when absorbed through skin: It can irritate skin, she says. And if applied in large quantities or on broken skin, methyl salicylate can mimic aspirin’s side effects, including constipation or diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness or stomach pain. People allergic to aspirin or are taking prescription blood thinners should avoid products with methyl salicylate, Lewin says. Healthy skin alternative: Go hot and cold. The National Institutes of Health recommends applying ice during the first 24-72 hours after an injury to reduce pain and inflammation. Afterward, heat may soothe soreness.

9. Skin Care Ingredients: Toluene
This chemical is found in most synthetic fragrances and used in some nail polish, nail products and cuticle treatments, Benest says. Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) also contains toluene. Risk when absorbed through skin: Toluene, made from petroleum, is harmful if swallowed or absorbed through skin. Chronic exposure is linked to anemia, lowered blood cell count, liver or kidney damage and birth defects, Benest says. Healthy skin alternative: Check out Revlon ColorStay Nail Enamel, which is BHT-free.

10. Skin Care Ingredients: Triclosan
An antibacterial ingredient, Triclosan is found in cleansers, soaps and acne washes, Benest says. Chlorphenesin is a similar antibacterial compound. Risk when absorbed through skin: “Triclosan has a chemical structure similar to Agent Orange,” Benest says. The EPA lists triclosan as a pesticide that’s highly toxic, she says. It’s a suspected cancer-causer and disrupts hormones. Antibacterial compounds, such as triclosan and chlorphenesin, don’t seem to break down and accumulate in body fat, Benest says. About 75% of Americans 6 years and older who took part in a 2003-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey had triclosan in their urine, according to scientists from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Healthy skin alternative: Studies have found that regular soap and water are just as effective as antibacterial wipes and rubs.

11. Skin Care Ingredients: Petrolatum
Petroleum-based ingredients and ointments are derived from crude oil and used for their emollient properties, Benest says. Mineral jelly; petrolatum amber; petrolatum white; petroleum jelly; yellow petrolatum; mineral grease (petrolatum) and paraffin are all petroleum-based ingredients. It’s common in lipsticks, moisturizers and anti-aging creams. Risk when absorbed through skin: Petroleum-based ingredients may interfere with the body’s own natural moistening mechanism, Benest says. The EWG says it’s been linked to cancer in government studies conducted by the National Toxicology Program and the EPA. Healthy skin alternative: Look to nature for simple alternatives, Benest recommends. Olive oil-based products are a safe option. And coconut oil can be applied directly to the skin as a moisturizer and – bonus – it’s a mild antifungal.

12. Skin Care Ingredients: Benzoyl Peroxide
This antiseptic has anti-inflammatory and oxidizing properties used to treat mild to moderate acne, Lewin says. Risk when absorbed through skin: Use it sparingly: Benzoyl peroxide can cause skin dryness and irritation, Lewin says. The EWG lists it as a high hazard chemical with links to reproductive toxicity at high doses and other health problems. Avoid sensitive areas around the eyes and mouth. And don’t use benzoyl peroxide with other products that irritate the skin, such as topical alcohol and abrasive skin cleansers, she says. Healthy skin alternative: Instead, look for over-the-counter acne treatments that include salicylic acid, Lewin says. Check out Oxy products, Noxzema Anti-Acne Gel and Pads, and Stridex. Another option: Anti-acne products that contain alcohol and acetone, including Tyrosum Liquid Acne Skin Cleanser and Glytone Acne Treatment Toner.

Trying to maintain a youthful appearance but don’t want to undergo the knife, Botox, or some other invasive procedure? Natural herbs and nutrients can help. Here are 11 of the best ones for anti-aging.

1. Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA): ALA is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect your body from free radical damage. It also helps to recycle other antioxidants like vitamins E and C, giving you greater protection against free radicals. Free radicals are to blame for aging and disease, including skin damage and wrinkling.

2. Bilberry: Packed with antioxidants, bilberry is potent medicine against many age-related concerns. It is helpful to preserve vision and prevent degenerative eye diseases.

3. GABA (Gamma-aminobutyric acid): Declining levels of HGH are linked with many of the symptoms linked with aging: fat gain, muscle loss, loss of energy, poor sleep, skin changes, bone density loss, and a decline in libido. Supplementing with GABA, a natural amino acid helps to maintain levels of HGH naturally, lessening these unwanted symptoms. Avoid GABA if you are prone to seizures.

4. Garlic (Allium sativum): Garlic is renowned for its potent effects on viruses and bacteria, but it also reduces cholesterol levels and helps lower blood pressure. In one Japanese study, garlic slowed age-related memory loss in animals.

5. Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba): There is solid scientific research that supports the use of ginkgo to increase blood flow to the brain, one of the areas that is commonly affected by aging. European research shows ginkgo’s capacity to help people with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia to become more sociable and alert. You can take 60 to 240 mg of standardized ginkgo extract per day.

6. Ginseng (Panax ginseng): Among the Chinese, ginseng is considered the Fountain of Youth. According to renowned herbalist Dr. James Duke, it tones the skin and muscles, improves appetite and digestion, and restores sexual energy.

7. Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica): Frequently used in India to improve memory and extend longevity, gotu kola is excellent when made into an herbal tea.

8. Horsetail (Equisetum arvense): Loaded with the mineral silicon that often declines with age, horsetail plays a role in increasing the silicon in arteries, skin, bones, cartilage and connective tissues. Horsetail is also available as a tea.

9. Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum): Since the liver has more than five hundred functions, including processing and filtering medications and environmental toxins, it can suffer from the stresses of the modern world. Silymarin, an active ingredient in milk thistle stimulates liver cell regeneration to help the liver rebuild after it has been damaged. A standardized extract of 140 mg of silymarin per day is suitable to help protect and repair the liver.

10. Peppermint (Metha peperita): In addition to helping with digestion and gastrointestinal problems linked with aging, peppermint contains antioxidants that help prevent cancer, heart disease, and other age-related disorders. It is readily available as an herbal tea.

11. Turmeric (curcuma longa): Turmeric is powerful against many types of pain and inflammation associated with aging. A spice, commonly used in Indian curries, you can add it to your soups, stews, and curries to benefit from this valuable spice.

12. Vitamin D: vitamin D helps protect against bone loss linked with aging, as well as many chronic illnesses like diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. Staying free of these diseases can certainly help you live a longer, healthier life.

It isn’t necessary to take all of the above herbs and nutrients to benefit from their anti-aging properties. Even one or two taken consistently can help. Start by drinking horsetail, gotu kola, or peppermint tea regularly and eating more curries with garlic and turmeric. Follow the manufacturer’s suggested dose for tinctures, capsules or tea. Consult a qualified health professional before taking any herbs or combining them with medications.

Assuming that most of you out there would be more inclined to purchase a product labeled “environmentally friendly” or “green”, its important to know that the majority of these products use deceptive labeling. According to a CBC study, three major “green” detergent brands came up dirty when tested to find out exactly what was in their bottle. Sunlight Green Clean, Clorox GreenWorks and Purex Natural Elements were tested, and of the three, Clorox GreenWorks was determined to contain the most natural, plant-based ingredients (98 percent). Sunlight Green Clean had only 62 percent plant-based ingredients, and Purex Natural Elements has 70 percent. The remaining thirty percent in each of those brands contained petroleum-based ingredients. The main problem is lack of proper regulation, according to Adria Vasil, author of the book Ecoholic Home. “It’s basically an indication that the government needs to step in and say we cannot allow misleading labeling to continue because it’s basically duping the consumer,” Vasil said.

Green weddings are getting easier than ever. Whether you plan to say ‘I do’ at a church alter or from the overlook of a gorgeous mountain vista, choosing a few green wedding tips will help you ensure that the lasting impression of your wedding is on the hearts of those attending, not on the wildlands you cherish.

Planning a wedding yourself? Here are 9 green wedding tips to make your day beautiful in all ways:

1. Order tree-friendly invitations: Save trees by printing your invitations–and thank you notes–on recycled paper. These days a host of companies specialize in beautiful hand-crafted invitations on 100 percent recycled paper.

2. Register for gifts that don’t end up in the landfill: Ask for donations to charities you care about rather than gifts that will eventually end-up in the landfill. TisBest offers offers charity gift cards so you can pick your favorite organization to support (like The Wilderness Society!) Or, if you don’t like that idea, you can always register for eco-friendly gifts, such as trees for your yard. The trees will be cherished for years to come while they perform double duty soaking up carbon.

<div style=”display:block;float:left;margin: 5px 5px 5px 5px;”>

3. Consider organic or local flowers: Select seasonal flowers that don’t have to be shipped from afar or organic flowers, which are grown using fewer chemicals. Organic Bouquet is one option.

4. Save money on your dress: Save money and resources by revamping vintage wedding dresses, or purchasing a dress made out of sustainable materials, such as organic cotton, silk or hemp. Recycled Bride connects buyers with sellers. Also, consider letting your bridesmaids wear their own previously purchased dresses within a color theme you pick, or select dresses that they can easily wear again.

5. Buy conscientious wedding rings: To avoid conflict diamonds and the environmental impacts of gold mining you might consider exchanging rings made of recycled materials, or vintage family heirlooms, which can make the meaning even more special. Greener Diamond offers resources on alternatives to conflict-free, green diamonds and questions you can ask to ensure you’re buying a clean ring.

6. Find a caterer who offers locally sourced, organic or vegetarian options: Supporting locally produced food helps reduce greenhouse gases created in the transportation of food–not to mention it’s generally fresher, healthier and better tasting. Organic fare uses fewer chemicals and agricultural practices that harm ecoysystems, and eating vegetarian helps decrease greenhouse gases and water pollution associated with meat production. (Food and Agricultural Organization of the UN, the livestock sector is responsible of 18 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, even outdoing transportation.) Greenyour.com is a great resource for choosing organic and locally-sourced caterers and restaurants.

7. Get creative with wedding favors: Eco-friendly wedding favors include simple items that your guests will appreciate, such as organic chocolate, wildflower seeds, plants or hand-made items.

8. Don’t make your guests travel once in town: Choose hotels near to your ceremony and reception to eliminate the need for rental cars.

9. Reduce, reuse, recycle: Weddings can be huge affairs. If you can’t bare to go with a smaller wedding that uses less resources, see what you can do to recycle and reuse after the big event. For example, ask your facility about their recycling policy, and after the big day is over, donate your flower bouquets and table adornments to a nursing home, where they will be fully appreciated.

Still not sure how easy a green wedding might be to arrange? Take if from our Wildlands Communication Manager Emily Diamond-Falk, who says planning a green wedding is easy, and much better for the budget.

For her eco-friendly wedding, Emily and her fiancée Alex have arranged to have local, seasonal flowers, locally sourced food and recycled materials for their reception and ceremony. With the exception of hard liquor, all of their beer, wine and food (which will be vegetarian) will come from within a 150 mile range. Invitations will be printed on recycled material. And Emily’s wedding dress is also recycled in a way – it was originally her mother’s. “Even the yarmulkes we are giving out are made from recycled cardboard,” Emily said. Emily and Alex also picked hotels that are walking distance from the wedding and other weekend events, so out-of-town guests won’t need to drive.

Now more than ever, pesticides and herbicides are being used on an industrial-scale which not only damage the surrounding environment but can severely affect human health. Choosing to buy organic food and clothing will reduce control over our food and cotton crops by greedy corporations like Monsanto, protect our well-being and curb harmful emissions at the same time. Unfortunately, for many of us struggling just to get by day to day, it can be hard to find eco-friendly alternatives that are also friendly on the wallet. So, we decided to go on the lookout for organic clothing options that are economical and chic… because we know you want to look good while saving the planet!

1. Threads for Thought, Average Price Ranges from $6-$50. Every piece of clothing is made using 100 percent certified organic cotton and, to boot, a portion of total proceeds go directly to environmental and humanitarian groups like the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC), the International Rescue Committee (IRC), and ENOUGH, a project geared toward ending crimes against humanity. Each collection is inspired by three major issues: the environment, Africa, and world conflict.

2. Recycle A Tee, Average Price Ranges from $15-$25. Recycle A Tee offers up tasteful graphic tees and tanks that are made using 100 percent certified organic cotton and low impact dyes. The company recycles 90 percent of the waste generated from its manufacturing processes and enforces environmentally responsible printing practices. Plus, when you don’t want your tee anymore you can send it back to them for a 25 percent store credit with free shipping both ways, no matter the condition!

3. Spun, Average Price Ranges from $25-$100. Spun’s clothing line brings sustainability and affordability together, showing the world “that organic clothing doesn’t have to be a luxury, it should be a choice.” Started by Sara Seumae, a mother of two girls with no fashion experience, each clothing line uses 100 percent certified organic cotton that is dyed with environmentally safe, low-impact fiber reactive processes.

4. Element EcoWear, Average Price Ranges from $24-$100. All clothing is made with a blend of luxuriously soft, fair-trade certified bamboo, organic cotton, hemp, and soy hull fibers. Bamboo happens to be one of the most sustainable sources of clothing and eco-friendly products, as it consumes four times more CO2 than trees. A percentage of every sale is also donated to environmental groups like the NRDC, Earthjustice, The Ocean Conservancy, The Coral Reef Alliance and The Trust for Public Land.

5. Eco Skin, Average Price Ranges from $15-$100. This fashion forward, eco-friendly clothing brand uses only environmentally sustainable fabrics that are made 100 percent in the USA. Founder Sandy Skinner maintains that “the more customers demand responsibly-produced eco-friendly products, the more the industry will demand responsible suppliers and the faster we will clean up our planet, making green living mainstream living.”

Holidays like Easter and Christmas can often be a time of rejuvenation in the normally busy lives of American families, promoting togetherness and creating memories that will remain for a lifetime. Yet another, not so positive aspect, of the holiday season that is usually overlooked is the waste involved. Wrapping paper from loads of Christmas presents, old Easter baskets (along with the paper trim and frills) that get tossed away into landfills are detrimental to a healthy planet. The good news, though, is that little changes — like simply making your own Easter basket, or using old newspaper to wrap presents — can make a big difference in the grand scheme of things. Here are a few of our “green” Easter crafts that we hope you will enjoy doing with your family and friends.

1. Take a page out of the White House sustainability book. The White House recently announced that their annual Egg Roll celebration will use eggs made entirely of certified sustainable wood. So not only is the wood derived from eco-friendly sources, but the eggs can also be reused year after year by simply painting them a solid base color and re-decorating them. Be sure to find non-toxic paints — and if you cannot find it in your local craft shops, you still have some time to order over the web. In choosing to purchase sustainable products over the standard, you will help promote a healthy environment and, hopefully, encourage more companies to sell those products as well.

2. Make your own egg dyes using God-given resources. Arguably, the best foods, drinks and even dyes come straight from our own backyard. For instance, to create pink and red colored eggs, all you need is a bit of juice from cranberries, beets, raspberries or strawberries. For yellow eggs, use some tumeric or orange peels. For purple, use some red wine. For blue eggs, use red cabbage or canned blueberries. For brown eggs, use coffee grounds. For orange coloring, use the skins of a yellow onion. What you will want to do first is boil the desired amount of eggs, and once they are cooled, wipe them clean so that they will take the color better. Then add a teaspoon of vinegar to boiling water, which will further improve uptake of the color. Boil eggs for fifteen minutes longer, or up to an hour depending on desired color, with any of the foods listed above (Note- if you are going to be working with sustainably harvested wooden eggs, these dyes will probably not cut it for the job, so the best bet is to purchase non-toxic paint). Why make the effort when you can just go buy some bottled dyes or paints at the market? Well, to start, synthetic paints and dyes use toxic chemicals that are not good for environment, and definitely not safe to be handled by children…. despite what the EPA may say. To boot, its just a waste of plastic — another man-made product that is continuing to flood our landfills, which will eventually melt and pollute the air we breathe. If we want to stay healthy, we must to learn to make better, more educated choices ourselves — not just listen to what our government (or anyone else for that matter) tells us. A more in-depth guide on making your own Easter egg dyes can be found at WhatsCookingAmerica.net.

3. Make your own Easter basket. Who says you have to buy a shoddy basket for 5 bucks from China when making your own is easy and fun?! Simply use an old milk jug (gallon sized, or half gallon will work too) and cut it in half. Not only will you be recycling, but its a really fun craft to do with your kids. You can get as creative with this one as you’d like. Use some cardboard from old appliance boxes and glue on white fabric or cotton balls to make the bunny ears. For the tail, you can use old cotton balls as well, or some fabric, whichever you prefer. Next, cut some pieces of fabric from old clothes to make the eyes, nose and mouth and glue em on. Finally, add some cut up newspaper or green construction paper (if you already have it) for the stuffing, and throw in some organic candies with home made basket “stuffers” and voila!… you have yourself an entirely sustainable Easter basket.

4. Make your own play-dough. This one will be a hit with the younger ones. It’s good to teach the kids about creating their own masterpiece. It will help them learn to work hard to get what they want and, more importantly, it will boost their confidence in seeing that they’ve made something from scratch. All you’ll need here is 1 cup flour, 1 tbsp vegetable oil, 1 cup water, 1/2 cup salt, 2 tsp. cream of tartar, and some natural food coloring of their choice (Note- Items like flour, tartar and veggie oil should be organic so that this craft can be 100 percent sustainable). Mix all ingredients in a saucepan. Heat, stirring constantly until a ball forms. Knead until smooth. Home made play dough recipes and more can be found at NatureMoms.com.

5. Get crafty with some DIY Easter basket fillers. Another great, homemade eco-friendly craft is to sew your own stuffed rabbits or baby chicks. Your little ones can keep them for generations to come, and the best part is that it isn’t too expensive. All you need is some old fabric for the outer shell and stuffing — but if you don’t have too much of it, go out and purchase some organic cotton balls to use for the filling. The video below will show you how to make these cute “basket stuffers” in just a few easy steps.

Most of all, remember to savor each moment… life is but a breath and we must take in ALL the air we can for we do not know what tomorrow brings. Enjoy your holiday!

Brazilian scientists have discovered a way to use fruit fibers in the production of plastics for car parts. The plastic is both lightweight and durable and nearly as strong as Kevlar, the synthetic fiber used in bulletproof vests. “The properties of these plastics are incredible,” the leader of the project, Alcides Leão of Sao Paulo State University, said in a press release. “They are light, but very strong — 30 per cent lighter and three to four times stronger. We believe that a lot of car parts, including dashboards, bumpers, side panels, will be made of nano-sized fruit fibers in the future. For one thing, they will help reduce the weight of cars and that will improve fuel economy.” Scientists say that fibers from plant materials like coconut shells, pineapple leaves and stems, bananas, agave, as well as cattails can all be used in the production of this “super” bioplastic. Yet another benefit to these plastics when compared to the traditional products is their high resistance to heat, water and spilled gasoline. According to Leão, their brainchild could be used in new vehicles within the next two years.

1. Conscious color: Choose low or non-VOC (non toxic) paints. If painting a color, choose blues, greens (cool colors promote calmness and serenity) and avoid hot colors (bright yellow, orange, red); however, if you love these colors, then temper them with their cool opposite on the color wheel. Color effects mood. The white color palette is always the default best for a spa feel: there are undertones from blue to yellow to pink, that give whites interest and depth.

2. Lighting: natural light –from skylights and windows is best, but for privacy purposes, use white or natural color fabrics coverings on the widows; another option is natural fiber Roman shades or wooden plantation shutters.

3. Textures: organic cottons and bamboos – have variety that you can see and touch – from mats to shower curtains (avoid plastic) to wall hangings, window shades – avoid anything artificial (polyester or plastic). Natural grasses and other fibers (linen, hemp, and wood) evoke a sublime “spa vibe” .

4. Linens (towels, robes, slippers): I like white because of its association with fresh, clean, and pure. Try to buy the highest quality you can afford – organic or bamboo mixture if possible. Choose non-toxic laundry products with no artificial fragrances. Avoid dryer sheets which are highly toxic.

5. Water: the source of all healing – make your bath soaking area as luxe as possible. Replace broken or cracked tiles, re-grout if needed to have nice clean grout. Update your bath/shower area with modern faucet sets. Install a shower head filter: just as you wouldn’t drink unfiltered water, nor should you expose yourself to unfiltered water in the shower – chlorine directly on your skin, day in and day out, is very toxic and can be the cause of serious allergies. It also fades your hair color very fast, and leads to all kinds of itchy scalp conditions. Protect your and your family’s health by investing in the best filter you can afford.

6. Keep your homemade spa super clean with all natural cleaning products (ex: Seventh Generation, Mrs. Meyer’s, or Method)- Or use the time-tested and very effective combination of white vinegar and baking soda to scour, get rid of soap scum, disinfect and clear drains. Check online to find directions and amounts. Avoid toxic cleaning chemicals at all costs!!!

7. Use aromatherapy to set the mood – avoid artificial fragrance at all costs. Use only pure essential oil candles (vegetable wax is preferable to soy which has high GMO and pesticide residues; paraffin is a petroleum by-product), incense, and other scent sources. Experiment with making your own potpourri out of dried flowers and herbs and set it around your homemade spa in pretty ceramic bowls. (avoid any container that is plastic – based).

8. For your “Calgon” moment: soak in Dead Sea salts– along with fresh rosemary, lavender, and mint. See below for some homemade spa recipes using essential oils (which should be organic, if possible; source plain Dead Sea salts online very easily). Always keep the water temperature at lukewarm when using the salts – the purpose is for your body to absorb the healing minerals and if the water is super hot, your body will be flushing out in response, rather than absorbing.

9. Finally, and most importantly: use your spa time as sacred retreat time. Meditate, do deep breathing, and most of all, visualize peace and rejuvenation. You deserve them!

Homemade Spa Soaking Recipes

Adding these essential oil blends to the tub along with some Dead Sea salts will complete your homemade spa experience.

For calming:
Lavender
Vetiver

For sore aches & pains:
Eucalyptus
Juniper
Cypress
Clary Sage

For tiredness/to reinvigorate:
Rosemary
Peppermint
Grapefruit

Article Reprinted from Natural Food List-

As an organic farmer, I protest the USDA’s recent decision to approve the unregulated planting of genetically modified alfalfa. This is a ruling that seriously jeopardizes the integrity of the organic food chain, and could cause irreparable harm to organic farmers by ruining our ability to supply organic dairy foods to customers. I believe that allowing genetically modified alfalfa to be planted deprives consumers of their right to be certain that they are feeding organic foods to their families.

Straus Family Creamery is a sustainable operation, proudly employing 62 local workers and supporting four local, family-owned, organic dairy farms. Straus Family Creamery provides consumers with certified organic, Non-GMO Project Verified dairy products they can trust.

Alfalfa is an essential feed for dairy cows and is the fourth most-planted crop in the nation. A perennial crop pollinated by bees, alfalfa is especially prone to contamination through cross-pollination. Because bees routinely fly up to five miles from their hives to pollinate plants, it is impossible for farmers to prevent contamination of organic or conventional alfalfa crops from genetically modified pollen.

The decision to deregulate GM alfalfa hurts both organic and conventional farmers who choose not to use genetically modified organism technologies. Alfalfa’s anchor at the base of the dairy supply chain puts the entire organic food chain in peril: Contaminated alfalfa leads to contaminated milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, as well as any other products containing dairy ingredients.

Organic consumers have little tolerance for genetically modified foods. Polls show that one major reason consumers buy organic foods is to avoid GM ingredients. More than 75% of consumers believe they are purchasing products without GM ingredients when they buy organic foods. Families who care about feeding their children healthy foods and health-conscious Americans of all ages are working hard to improve their diets. Farmers and consumers will suffer when GM alfalfa is planted.

In 2006, Straus Family Creamery became the first organic dairy to voluntarily test organic cattle feed. Some feed corn sold to our dairy farm as organic was contaminated by GMOs, not through the fault of organic farmers. The livelihoods of all organic farmers, as well as suppliers, producers and retailers in the organic industry have been put at risk by unregulated GMOs. Our own testing program led to Straus Family Creamery becoming the first and only dairy company to achieve Non-GMO Project Verification for all of our products. This allows us to carry the Non-GMO Project Seal on our packaging and provides consumers with additional assurance that they are not consuming GMOs.

Since 2006, along with the Center for Food Safety and other advocates for organic integrity, we’ve been fighting in court against approval of GM alfalfa. This latest USDA decision is a serious blow to both farmers and consumers. The Center for Food Safety plans to take this issue back to the courts and Straus Family Creamery will support them in this fight. In the meantime, we will be calling on our customers and all consumers to join us in protest.

Straus Family Creamery has always stood for the integrity of the organic label. We depend on it. Our customers depend on it. We believe Americans deserve quality products from farmers committed to safe and healthy food.

About Straus Family Creamery:
Straus Family Creamery, the nation’s first and only Non-GMO Project Verified dairy brand, strives to consistently provide the highest quality, best tasting, organic milk, yogurt, butter and ice cream made with minimal processing and wholesome ingredients.
It is estimated that 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags are used annually, which calculates to over one million consumed every minute. To make matters worse, one measly plastic bag can take up to 1,000 years to break down. And whats more, only around 1 to 3 percent of these bags are even recycled. Enter One Small Step, an online retailer that offers eco-friendly food containers, wraps, bags, napkins — basically everything the average consumer would use in their daily brown bag lunch. This environmentally-conscious company has started the “Boycott the Baggie” campaign to show consumers that one small change can make a monumental impact. By pledging to eliminate one piece of trash every day, you will join thousands of others to support and make a change in this wasteful and largely inconsiderate world. One Small Step’s video below, entitled “Who Needs the Junk”, shows that the average child can generate up to 67 pounds of trash, from lunch waste alone! Visit BoyCottTheBaggie.com to sign up and learn how to reduce your consumption and promote a healthier planet for generations to come.
