Gulf Spill Continues to Threaten Animal & Human Life-

It’s day 56 of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, and despite growing pressure from the Obama administration to restore the mess in the Gulf, BP has yet to find a long-term solution. In fact, from an outsiders perspective, it doesn’t even appear that anyone is trying to. Charter boat captain Jeff Brunfield, in an attempt to prove a point, waded into Southeast Louisiana’s Barataria Bay. These waters may appear clean from the surface, but deep down there are considerable consequences taking place. “I’ll show you what’s under the water,” said Brunfield. “It’s oil.” Tons of BP oil, sunken to the bottom of the bay. Brunfield said he could feel it between his toes. “This is what’s going to kill us,” he said. “This stuff on the bottom because the shrimp and all that have to have the bottom.” According to CBS News, BP’s well could be leaking more than a million gallons per day. If that’s the truth, BP is containing less than half of it. Officials from the Obama White House say they would rather BP concentrate less on the spewing well, and more on preventing oil from reaching the shoreline. “We need to fight this war between the shore and the off-shore well,” said Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen. “We’ve got to get our skimmers further offshore to minimize the amount of oil that comes ashore.” However, no one fully knows how much oil has already tainted coastlines. Lauren Craig, from the Bucket Brigade, wants to uncover this mystery. “I think it’s a lot bigger than we can see,” she said. Craig’s group flies kites mounted to cameras to take aerial photos, with a GPS system to help plot oil-covered environment. “We want to make sure that people are held accountable for what is happening down here,” said Craig. No camera, however, will ever expose all the damage underwater. “This is just what we’re seeing here. What’s behind us? What’s out there four or five feet deep?” asked Brunfield. Only time will tell how the Deepwater Horizon spill will impact ocean and human life alike, but one hopes that BP will begin taking this spill seriously and perform immediate remediation to prevent the spreading of oil to other coastlines.
